What Is a Furnace and Air Conditioning System?

The air conditioning part of your heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) system chills refrigerant (with an outside unit) while the furnace works inside with fans and coils. The HVAC system’s ductwork transports air throughout the home, heating or cooling your home as needed.

Natural gas vs Propane?

Most North American homes are kept warm with furnaces. Furnaces can be powered by four different types of fuel: natural gas, liquid propane, electricity, and oil. Natural gas and propane furnaces are the most common types to find in homes, with each having their own benefits. Natural gas furnaces are the cheaper option of the two, utilizing a convenient fuel source that is typically already set up to homes via gas lines. Propane furnaces produce half the carbon dioxide a natural gas furnace would emit thanks to propane being the cleanest-burning fossil fuel available. However, this efficiency is usually offset by propane fuel being pricier than natural gas. Propane is also stored in pressurized tanks that sit somewhere outside the home. These tanks will need to be refilled from time to time, but it is still an effective solution for homes that lack a gas service line. Both fuel types are very effective for heating homes, but in the end it all comes down to factors such as local fuel prices, presence or absence of a gas line, the furnace’s current fuel configuration, if there is a local fuel delivery service in the area, and so on.

Natural Gas vs Propane

How Does a Furnace and Air Conditioner Work Together?

Three major components in your system all work in concert to efficiently heat and cool your home: the Furnace (or heating unit), the outside Air Conditioner Condenser, and the Evaporator Coil, which lives inside with the furnace. The evaporator coil is connected to the outside condenser by means of a line set, which is insulated copper tubing that delivers and returns a constant flow of refrigerant circulating between the two. Air is blown over the surface of the coil as refrigerant flows past that surface, resulting in cold air. That cold air is blown through the furnace (which acts as an air handler when heat is not needed) and then delivered throughout the house by its duct system. Heating a home is almost the same process, but the furnace will be heating the air as it passes through.

FAQ

Cheaper may not always be the right way of describing purchasing a complete system when one component is still, apparently, working well. Smartest, most cost effective or most efficient are the best terms for buying all at once. For a lifetime home, or a system that we expect to outrun the warranty, it is best to start entirely new, matched and professionally installed. Homeowners often wish to save by not replacing Evaporator coils when replacing their Furnace/AC system, and it is always a bad idea. We have learned from years of experience, and hundreds of thousands of calls, that best practices pay off in many ways: convenience, confidence, time, hassle, and money all matter to us and to you!

When purchasing an HVAC system, it is always best to think in terms of engineering compatibility, complimentary design and features intended by the manufacturer. Few, if any, warranties will apply to systems that match non-paired components by mixed manufacturers. They are referred to as “Frankensystems”. That being said, certain major manufacturers have several lines under the same umbrella, which may mean that combining them is not a big deal. Always know the maker of HVAC equipment.

A furnace is simply the heat source in a normal HVAC system, most often gas fueled, but sometimes electric, as in a heat pumps systems, or water or oil based, as we find on the East and Northeast coasts often Thew furnace is located inside and paired with an evaporator coil. The AC unit, or condenser, is located outside.

The classic warning signs of malfunction and imminent failure are:

Grating or starting noises, presence of soot in air, dry air, rising utility costs, difficulty heating or cooling as before, starting problems, particularly with your furnace, or short cycling of your AC.
